Number of deaths in England and Wales reaches 12-year high

Life expectancy at birth falls by 0.2 years for men and 0.3 for women in 2014-15, in which time deaths increased by 28,000

The number of deaths in England and Wales reached a 12-year high last year, causing a decline in life expectancy for men and women.

Deaths surged between 2014 and 2015, with flu thought to be responsible for taking the lives of a significant number of people aged 75 and over.
