Mud, wind and rain. Just your standard bank holiday weekend weather then. Whether you were racing, watching or sitting on the sidelines nursing a niggle, share your weekend exploits below the line as always
All the top athletes took a tumble this weekend. Geoffrey Kamworor recovered from his with a casual 4min 15sec first mile in a half marathon (something I know we can all knock out, right?) to win. In the case of one younger, debut racer, winning was not nearly as important as the lure of the chocolate eggs awaiting later that day. That would be my four year old, making her junior parkrun debut. Mind you, at least Kamworor managed to get up without too much collateral damage: my mini athlete somehow took me out as well. If there had been judges I reckon my roll would have scored at least an 8.5. Still, mud makes for a reasonable soft landing ...
At least at that point on Sunday, the weather was relatively calm. Which is more than can be said for yesterday morning. “Enter a race on Easter Monday? That’s a good idea!” I’d thought. “Clocks will have gone back, weather will be milder, it’s supposed to be a fast course ...” Insert your own hollow laugh here. I’m not entirely sure it shouldn’t have been reclassified as a swim-run. There was certainly some quality dark humour/ Blitz spirit on display at the River Thames Spring (ha!) Half - runners are often prone to wondering if they are a little mad as they stand, lined up, shivering in the cold on a bank holiday morning when sane people are still in bed. Add in Storm Katie and the lunacy is no longer in question. Still, we all survived. And just after the finish, the sun came out. Cheers, weather.
