The dilemma My daughter attends a grammar school that she keeps wanting to leave every time she is in trouble for being late. She has self-harmed twice in one year, and has seen a counsellor. She never helps with housework and expects us to take her plates out and deliver her drinks. She swears at me, threatens to smash my belongings and has ripped up all the pictures of her in our home. She has used my toothbrush to clean the toilet. She says that when I’m old and in a home she wants to feed me cat food.
Mariella replies She sounds a delight! Though on the plus side at least she’s going to feed you. You poor man, it seems you are at your wits’ end and I’m not surprised. Negotiating your way through a child’s teenage years is hard work at the best of times and a near-impossible challenge in the worst cases.
