Santander – where’s my account with £125,000?

I moved abroad in 1997, and now can’t seem to trace my money in the UK

I read with interest a complaint from a reader who had a small amount in an Abbey National account which then disappeared, despite a passbook turning up. I moved from the UK to the US in 1997 and had just over £125,000 in an Abbey National account. Living in the US, I had no idea Abbey National had been acquired by Santander.

Despite contacting Santander and the Financial Services Ombudsman, I have had no success in tracing the money. Surely this is an absolute disgrace. As far as I can see, it has no relevance whether the Abbey National has converted to another name, but is robbery on a grand scale. Is there any other path to recover this money?
